Exceeding Your Expectations

Reparative hair procedures focus on correcting or enhancing the outcomes of previous hair transplant surgeries that may have left patients dissatisfied.

These procedures are often necessary when older techniques, such as large grafts (sometimes referred to as "plug transplants"), have left an unnatural appearance or when visible scarring from prior surgeries has become a concern.

The Foundation Aesthetic Hair Restoration Method emphasizes individualized care, ensuring that each patient’s unique needs are met through customized treatment plans. Our goal is to create a natural, fuller hairline and improve any aesthetic concerns from past surgeries. We use the latest innovations, such as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), and techniques, such as scar revision, graft redistribution, and new transplantations, to achieve optimal, lasting results.

Why Choose a Reparative Hair Procedure?

Patients who seek reparative procedures typically experience 1 or more of the following issues:

  • Unnaturally placed grafts, particularly along the hairline, consisting of 2, sometimes 3 or more hairs
  • Insufficient density
  • Improper direction of hair growth (e.g., too perpendicular rather than angled forward)
  • Scarring of the donor site from a prior strip/FUT procedure or from FUE where the area was over-harvested using large punches
  • Scarring of the skin (such as cobble stoning) or pitting due to poor graft placement
  • Unaesthetic hairline design, most commonly too flat or too low

Fortunately, poor outcomes from hair transplants can be significantly improved using a variety of approaches.

Finishing the Job

Reparative hair procedures require a thorough consultation to evaluate the condition of both the previous transplants and the donor area. Your Foundation method surgeon may recommend a variety of treatments to help you get the results you want. FUE Graft Removal and Plug Reduction uses advanced FUE hair transplant techniques to improve the appearance of unnatural grafts, addressing problems such as improper placement, excessive density along the hairline, and visible scarring. Grafts are carefully extracted and either repositioned for better density and placement or discarded, depending on the desired outcome.

This minimally invasive approach allows for fast healing and minimal scarring. If preferred, a new hair transplant can be performed as soon as 6 weeks later, incorporating aesthetic hairline design principles to further enhance your results.

Additional grafting, commonly from the scalp—or, in some cases, from the beard (due to the similarity in hair texture)—is a common method used to correct prior transplant work, often providing 100s to 1000s of additional grafts.

Move Forward With the Results You Deserve

The Foundation method uses specialized scar revision techniques to minimize or eliminate widened or visible donor site scars from prior FUT/strip procedures or poorly performed FUE harvesting. These include scar excision with plastic surgery methods or the implantation of FUE grafts to conceal the scar. Hair regrowth rates in scar tissue can be lower, so 2- or 3-hair grafts are often used, along with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections to enhance growth. Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is also an effective solution, reducing scar visibility by up to 70% with just 1- or 2-hour-long procedures, and can complement results from hair grafting. Surgical hairline excision involves advancing the natural hairline by removing up to 1 inch or more of the grafted hairline containing poorly placed grafts and scarred skin. The remaining scalp is sutured together, typically leaving a fine-line scar designed to allow hair to grow through it. Any viable grafts in the excised tissue are carefully dissected and can be replanted into other areas of the scalp. This procedure is performed under twilight sedation and local anesthesia, with a recovery period of about a week. Sutures are removed from the hairline at that time, allowing the patient to return to most normal activities.
