Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is also an effective solution, reducing scar visibility by up to 70% with just 1- or 2-hour-long procedures, and can complement results from hair grafting. Surgical hairline excision involves advancing the natural hairline by removing up to 1 inch or more of the grafted hairline containing poorly placed grafts and scarred skin. The remaining scalp is sutured together, typically leaving a fine-line scar designed to allow hair to grow through it. Any viable grafts in the excised tissue are carefully dissected and can be replanted into other areas of the scalp. This procedure is performed under twilight sedation and local anesthesia, with a recovery period of about a week. Sutures are removed from the hairline at that time, allowing the patient to return to most normal activities.
